Here at National Blog Writing Month we’ve been given a lovely list of ideas for prompts from our fearless leader, NotHannah. I’ve been marinating on that list for the better part of the day trying to figure out what to write and how to write it. And I’ll be honest – I’m a bit stymied.
It’s Tuesday. They’re the odd day. Monday’s are usually insane. Wednesday is hump day. And Thursday is nearly Friday and Friday brings in the weekend. And then there’s Tuesday. A day without a nickname. How did I spend my Tuesday? I couched it. I watched Netflix. And I gleefully found a new season of Dirty Jobs ready to watch. And I fell back in love with Mike Rowe.
Yes, I have a man crush on the man. If I could be anyone, it’d be Mike. His Ted Talk in 2008? Pure amazingness. When I watch his show I just want to give him a huge hug, high five and tell him to keep doing what he’s doing. He tells the stories of the people doing the unthinkable, unpleasant and impressive that not many would commit to doing. And his style, his manners and his way of relating to and working with people makes you just want to hang out with him more and more. Mike Rowe is the man.
When I think about relational ministry and one of the better examples of what it would look like to be as close to Jesus as you could – Mike’s way of doing things with people on the show exemplifies that in the best way. I don’t know Rowe’s religious leanings but I love his style with people. It reminds me of what it means to love your neighbor as yourself. Mike has fun with them, loves on them and leaves them better than he found them.
That’s what’s been on my mind today. To quote The Mighty Cronkite, that’s the way it was today, October 2nd, 2012.
