Stroke Update

Apr15
2008
Written by Aaron DeLay

Yes, you read the original post correctly. I had a stroke last Monday the 7th. Funny thing. I didn’t know it was a stroke until the wee hours of Thursday morning. How did this all happen? I can tell you, but it’s going to take several posts and some time so bear with me as a few of my “projects” (vlog, radio show, fiction) slow to a crawl during the next week or so as I get my bearings back.

First, I had a mild/small stroke on Monday at work. Felt some heavy numbness in my left side. Thought it was a pinched nerve. Second, I was doing AWANA’s at my church on Wednesday night when I stomped my foot during some fun worship and felt a stab of something go from my hip to my toes.

*Insert Ominous Music Here*

As I got off stage I realized my left leg wasn’t working as well as it should. My left arm was pretty useless with numbness. I said to myself, “This can’t be good”. I drove home with my right hand firm on the wheel. Stumbled around the apartment, unable to use my left leg. Called my mom, The Former Nurse. She did a field test with a vid cam and watched me try to walk a straight line.

Instead watched horrified as I tried two steps and crashed to the ground.

*cue ER theme song*

And so I drove myself to the ER, walked with the cane I had in my closet and the rest is history. Five brain scanning heart licking body slamming tests later…I was cleared.

And they still have no idea what caused my small stroke. No brain cogs broken. Speech still works.

And I can still type faster than that sorry ole’ Mavis Beacon lady.

More to come as I get the time and energy.
